History
The Unemployed Women’s Movement was formed to address the
economic needs of women in Esteli, especially single mothers. The
Movement was co-founded by women who sought to make a living by
helping others like themselves.
Mission
To mobilize and train women living in poverty so that they can develop
economic and social activities, which allows them to improve their
lives. The Unemployed Women's Movement not only trains women
in marketable skills, but also educates them about self-esteem,
gender issues, and family planning.
Activities
The Movement now offers classes to women in marketable skills so
that they can earn income to support their families. The Movement
offers low-cost classes in cosmetology, sewing, cooking, and baking.
Future projects The women of the Unemployed Women’s Movement are always looking ahead to find ways to expand their services, and create new opportunities for women to achieve economic independence and personal fulfillment.
The following are some of their ideas for the near future:
- Expand the El Sol Children’s Cafeteria project to include
more children
- Offer training to mothers of children in the El Sol project
- Offer employment opportunities to the mothers of children in
the El Sol project
- Initiate project to provide job skills training for adolescents
